The Cactus Flower
In summary of The Cactus Flower
This is a personal story of unconditional love, hope, faith, betrayal, dissolution of a long-term marriage and the subsequent dismantling of the lives of the mother and daughter left behind.
The story’s contents become relevant today, i.e., it reflects how a mother and daughter, through unconditional love for each other and faith in God – survived the myriad of material, social, emotional, and spiritual losses that ensued as the result of a horrible divorce. The end result was a dismantling of their entire family structure.
The importance of this work is to show, first-hand, that one need not give in to fear, or any of the negative emotions, no matter how devastating one’s circumstances may become.
Before overcoming such devastation, the severity of the losses culminated into: grief, chronic depression, anger, sadness, and ultimately ended in an existential crisis, leading to a darkness that can best be described by Kafka in his description of the metaphysical storm.
Overcoming the dark night of the soul led to the development of an impermeable bond of unconditional love and faith between this mother and daughter - through God’s grace, their unbreakable bond enabled them to overcome their fear and provide them with a love and faith “strong enough for the darkness.”
